The Knight Creative Communities Institute is a public policy organization that supports community-driven efforts to cultivate the creative economy and place-based development. It partners with local government agencies, redevelopment authorities, educational institutions, and cultural organizations to implement placemaking and public-art projects intended to spur sustained regional economic prosperity. The initiative originated in 2007, when Knight Foundation and Richard Florida's Creative Class Group selected Tallahassee as a focus region because of its government and education sector concentration and its historical challenges in attracting the creative sector. With a very small staff, the organization operates in the United States, with its activities concentrated in Tallahassee and nearby communities. A recent example of its work is the March 2026 collaboration with SoMo Walls to create eight large-scale murals along the South Monroe Street corridor as part of the Southside Public Arts Initiative.
