The Jewish Book Council, founded in 1943, is the longest-running organization devoted exclusively to supporting and celebrating Jewish literature. Based in New York, New York, it operates within the book and periodical publishing space and oversees the National Jewish Book Awards, inaugurated in 1950 and recognized as the most prestigious North American awards program of its kind for English-language Jewish-interest titles. It coordinates more than 1,100 literary events annually across North America through its JBC Network and Read On programs, enabling authors to introduce Jewish-interest books to diverse communities and giving event organizers access to a broad pool of writers for book fairs and cultural events. Its Paper Brigade is the council’s annual literary journal, named in honor of the group of writers and intellectuals in the Vilna Ghetto who rescued thousands of Jewish books and documents; the publication reflects today’s diverse Jewish literary landscape in America and abroad, and it was a finalist for CLMP's 2018 Firecracker Award for Best Debut Magazine. On Paper Brigade Daily, the organization publishes essays, interviews, reading lists, and related content online each week. JBC Book Clubs provides resources to support book clubs focused on Jewish-interest titles, including reviews, discussion questions, annual reading guides, virtual meetups with members from other clubs, thematic reading lists, and more.
