Based in Chico, California, illuminAid is a nonprofit organization that builds capacity for video-based communication in the development sector. Founded in January 2008 by Matt and Patrice York, it trains and equips organizations in developing nations to produce and share low-cost video content that educates and safeguards communities facing major global challenges. The organization collaborates with established partners to incorporate video into behavior-change communication strategies and has trained more than 600 NGO workers across 28 countries. In addition to training, illuminAid provides equipment and guidance on video production while pursuing hardware and software innovations to increase reach and impact. IlluminAid aims to empower individuals in the 70 poorest countries to create locally originated videos on topics such as public health, disaster risk management, improved food security, basic education, sanitation and hygiene, and maternal and child health. In May 2022, illuminAid announced a collaboration with Broadfield Distributing Inc. through its Broadfield Cares program, reflecting a partnership to support solar-powered and battery-operated video technology.
