The IAATI-Western Chapter was formed and chartered in 1988 as a regional arm of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators in the United States. It spans three Canadian provinces—Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan—and a broad set of U.S. states, including Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The organization maintains a minimal staff footprint. At its inception, the chapter aimed to support the existing state and provincial auto theft associations and the training they provide, rather than running its own stand-alone seminars. This objective led to the chapter being known as the paper chapter, since no separate annual training event is held to avoid conflicts with member associations, a purpose that remains in place. Governance centers on a board of directors drawn from the presidents of the member state and provincial auto theft associations within the Western Regional Chapter.
