The mission of the “I Have A Dream” Foundation - New York (IHDF-NY) is to motivate and empower children living in low-income communities to reach their educational and career potential by providing a long-term program of academic support, mentoring, enrichment, and tuition assistance for higher education. The "I Have A Dream" - New York approach is unique. We sponsor cohorts of 50-75 students (called "Dreamers") in under-resourced public schools or housing developments, and work with these Dreamers from early elementary school all the way through high school. We also provide guaranteed tuition assistance to any Dreamer who graduates high school. IHDF-NY provides a rigorous, year-round program of academic support, mentoring, college preparation, and dynamic experiences that engage Dreamers with a wide variety of subjects, including: the arts, employable skills training, healthy living, and the importance of community service. Programming is designed to enhance Dreamers’ academic performance, build social skills, and foster a college-ready mindset from an early age. By helping our Dreamers gain access to college, we help put them on a different academic and life trajectory, enabling them to break the cycle of poverty and improve their chances for a brighter future. Our method has a demonstrated track record of success: Dreamers have an 88% high school graduation rate, significantly above the New York City average of 71%. It is notable that the New York City average includes students from all socioeconomic backgrounds, while IHDF-NY works exclusively with students from low-income neighborhoods, who are five times less likely to graduate than peers from middle-income families, and six times less likely than peers from higher-income families. Contributing to and volunteering with IHDF-NY helps us reach more children and enhance our services.
