Global Electronics Council (GEC) is a nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon, founded in 2006 to promote more equitable and sustainable outcomes in electronics. The organization emphasizes that electronics are increasingly embedded in a wide range of products—from homes and cars to wearables—and that while electronic technologies can deliver societal benefits, their production and use carry notable environmental and social costs. GEC serves as a bridge between large institutional buyers and electronics manufacturers, providing tools and resources to help public and private purchasers procure technology aligned with sustainability and social responsibility. In the environmental services arena, it develops standards and labeling initiatives, including the 2026 effort to create EPEAT Renew, an ecolabel for refurbished devices beginning with notebook computers, and a related product category proposal that invites stakeholder feedback.
