Mission Community Youth Advance harnesses the power of community and transforms out-of-school time to Teach, Reach and Keep youth on the path to success. Vision We envision a world where all students have the social and academic support they need to be prepared for college, careers, and life. History Community Youth Advance was founded in 2018 through a merger between Mentoring to Manhood (M2M) and Community Tutoring Inc. (CTI). When it was founded in 2005, M2M was one of very few groups addressing the needs of young black males in Prince George’s County. Starting with a Saturday mentoring program, it steadily grew over the years, adding tutoring, afterschool programming and family support services. During the same time, an accomplished educator was becoming increasingly dismayed by the growing number of students who struggled to read at grade level. She began using a local apartment building’s community center to tutor children after school, creating CTI. M2M and CTI began working together in 2011 to improve the academic performance of boys through mentoring. In 2016, the two organizations realized they were stronger together and ultimately merged to form Community Youth Advance (CYA). Today, CYA provides academic and social emotional learning opportunities to more than 1,200 youth annually - boys and girls - in Prince George’s County and Northeast Washington DC.
