The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Through school site based coordination, CIS connects students and their families in Nevada to critical community resources tailored to the schools and/or individual students' specific needs. By providing students with a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult, a safe place to learn and grow, a healthy start and future, a marketable skill upon graduation and a chance to give back to peers and the community, CIS has become the nation's leading drop out prevention programs. A five-year study of the national Communities in Schools network – conducted by ICF International, which was founded by the Inner City Fund – demonstrates CIS’s effectiveness. This study found that CIS’s model resulted in the strongest reduction of dropout rates of any existing fully scaled dropout prevention program that has been evaluated. CIS is effective across the many states, school districts, grade levels and student ethnicities served. Over 90 percent of students in partner schools were promoted to the next grade level, 84 percent of seniors graduate with 97 percent of those considered at-risk of dropping out remaining in school. CIS of Nevada is currently serving 20,000 children in 29 schools throughout the state. Nationally, it is working in more 3,200 schools in the most challenged communities in 26 states and the District of Columbia.
