ClassNK, founded in 1899, is a ship classification society based in Tokyo, Japan, focused on safer and cleaner seas. It conducts surveys and classifications of ships and marine structures under its own rules and issues statutory certifications on behalf of more than 100 flag states. The organization also provides management-system certifications aligned with ISO and other international standards, and actively supports digitalization and decarbonization in the maritime industry. With a global footprint through 130 exclusive surveyor offices, it offers 24/7 client support to a worldwide base of ship owners and operators. Its reach is evidenced by about 280 million gross tons on its register, representing roughly 20% of the world’s merchant fleet. A notable recent development is the world-first Approval in Principle for an ammonia-fuelled panamax bulk carrier announced at Sea Japan 2026 by ClassNK Consulting Service Co.
