Located about 40 miles west of Chicago and serving as Kane County's seat since 1835, the city functions as a mid-sized municipality with a diverse local economy that includes more than a thousand businesses. Geneva also operates a municipal electric utility, a feature cited for its lower cost to customers, and supports a historic downtown and community services.

The city's built environment emphasizes historic architecture and adaptive reuse, complemented by extensive parkland—about 700 acres across 48 parks—and miles of recreational trails along the Fox River. Geneva's major employers include Delnor-Community Hospital and Kane County, among others, reflecting its role as a regional economic center. In recent years it has pursued partnerships and sustainability initiatives, such as collaborations with Recycle Coach and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve toy drive, and it has been recognized as a Tree City USA community.
