Chorale Bel Canto is a small, volunteer-based choral ensemble based in El Monte, California. Founded in 1982 by Whittier College Choir Alumni, it operates as a not-for-profit educational organization led by Director of Choral Activities Stephen Gothold, and it invites new singers to audition year-round through its website. The organization is chartered by the IRS as a not-for-profit educational entity and receives support from the Los Angeles County Arts Council, private foundations, and individual donors. It has a history of notable performances in Southern California and beyond, including a 1994 concert in Japan and a 1995 appearance at the Hollywood Bowl where it joined about 1,000 singers from the United States and Japan to perform Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. In 2001, members joined with Whittier College students and alumni and the Imperial Valley Choral Society for an Eastern Europe tour, performing selections of American hymns, spirituals, and sacred songs.
