We are dedicated to helping families rebuild, renew, and strengthen relationships impacted by parental mental health challenges. The Future of Helping Families Heal: In 2010, nine-year-old Charlotte asked if she could share her struggles with other kids who have a parent with a mental illness. It was a milestone in a journey that began a decade before with her father’s recovery from near-death, institutionalization, and destitution followed by years of hard work by father and daughter to rebuild their relationship, damaged by the effects of Evan Kaplan’s bipolar disorder. Inspired by her request, Evan and a cross-functional, cross-organizational team of behavioral health experts, academics, researchers, and parents with “lived experience” started a support group for families living with parental mental health challenges (PMHC). CFC is the first peer-run organization in the U.S. focused exclusively on helping families living with parental mental illness. With partners like Independence Blue Cross Foundation, Google, RHD, Patricia Kind Foundation, and others, CFC is pioneering programs that help families rebuild, repair, and renew relationships damaged by parental mental illness. We teach parents and their children skills and strategies that promote individual and family resilience using a curriculum grounded in research from Harvard, UCLA, Dartmouth. Hugs, tears, and compassion empower participants to overcome years of crippling shame, guilt, and stigma. CFC also run phone support groups for parents. Whether they come to a workshop or call into the support group, parents are unified by their love for their families and their courage to face their fears. CFC has become a thought-leader in the field and trusted resources for families through keynote presentations at international conferences, contributions to academic journals, features in the media, and awards for our work. And Charlotte’s request continues to transform lives.
