Chicago Semester is a higher education program anchored in experiential learning, offering college students real-world opportunities in an urban setting. Its aim is to provide urban, experiential education from a Christian perspective that equips students for integrated personal, professional, and public lives. Founded in 1974 by six colleges in the Reformed Christian tradition, the program has involved more than 4,500 alumni to date. Each year, more than 100 students from 27 colleges participate in the Chicago Semester program, living in Chicago while engaging with arts, diverse neighborhoods, and the city's transportation system as part of their studies. Faculty use the city as a laboratory to explore urban issues, and students work with professional mentors at leading Chicago companies and organizations to build networks for future careers. In 2019, the program partnered with Illinois Wesleyan University to ensure teaching placements meet state licensure requirements.
