Bluestone Perennials is a family-owned retail business founded in 1972 and based in Madison, Ohio, in the Northeast near Lake Erie. It grows and ships more than 3 million plants annually to customers nationwide, supported by a mail-order model. The venture began in two small rented glass houses in Mentor, Ohio, led by Richard Boonstra, his wife Patti, and their two teenage children as it set its course.

In 1978, the Boonstras purchased a 47-acre vegetable farm in Madison, expanding the operation and its greenhouse footprint over time. Early offerings included vegetables, mums, pumpkins, and perennials, reflecting a long-standing focus on garden plants that has grown into a nationwide plant production and distribution operation.
