The American Optometric Association is a nonprofit federation of state, student, and armed forces optometric associations founded in 1898 and based in St. Louis, Missouri. It represents the optometry profession and advocates for the role of America's family eye doctors in comprehensive eye and vision care. Doctors of optometry are independent primary health care professionals for the eye, with extensive training to examine, diagnose, treat, and manage disorders of the eye and visual system. They provide about two-thirds of primary eye care in the United States. The AOA maintains public resources on eye health and vision topics and helps people locate an optometrist through its website. In recent developments, Optometry's Meeting 2025 in Minneapolis is set to host the 5th World Congress of Optometry in partnership with the World Council of Optometry, reflecting ongoing collaboration in the field.
