Actes Sud is a French publishing house operating in the book and periodical publishing sectors. It was founded in 1978 in a village in the Baux valley by Hubert Nyssen and Christine Le Boeuf, and was soon joined by other founders. The company developed a generalist editorial approach and quickly stood out for its regional presence, distinctive book design, and openness to foreign literature as well as works from diverse disciplines. Since 1983 it has been based at Le Méjan in Arles, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, pursuing independence and a culture of discovery that connects authors with readers and with booksellers, librarians, media and cultural partners. In 2019, Actes Sud received an award for its French translation of The Nature of Despotism by Abdul Rahman Al Kawakibi, reflecting its engagement with international literature.
