Abode Communities is a nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles, California, focused on addressing urban inequity through housing and community development. It was founded in 1968 as an all-volunteer effort during the Civil Rights movement and initially engaged in civic engagement, community design, and planning, before shifting in the mid-1980s to concentrate on producing and preserving affordable housing amid rising costs and homelessness in the city. By 2000, the organization began managing its housing portfolio and piloted its resident services program, Beyond Homes. Today, Abode Communities owns and operates nearly 50 affordable residential communities that serve about 7,300 people across California, with more than half featuring onsite resident services.  The organization emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to community development that prioritizes residents’ lived experiences and aims to improve long-term economic mobility and housing stability across generations. It collaborates with public agencies and other nonprofits on projects, including a 2026 partnership with Sahahomes and the Berkeley Unified School District to develop affordable workforce housing for Berkeley teachers.
