WHC is a not-for-profit company wholly owned by the University of the Witwatersrand and operates under the Faculty of Health Sciences, based in Johannesburg, Gauteng. It provides a legal and operational framework for health sciences research and offers a range of support services to help academics manage their activities. Founded in 1998 to unlock the Faculty’s clinical research potential, WHC reinvests surpluses into the consortium and university infrastructure while promoting entrepreneurial ownership within formal governance, and it has incubated initiatives such as the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre. Its primary customers are academics within the Faculty of Health Sciences conducting research, and WHC helps them balance flexibility with oversight to streamline research management. In January 2026, WHC partnered with the South African Medical Research Council to conduct an HIV vaccine trial, alongside DTHF, marking a milestone in Africa-led clinical research.
