The L.A. Watts Summer Games was created as the City’s solution to civil unrest following the tragic riots of 1965. Today the Games, which will now continue as the USA City Games™, will be inspired by the current mosaic of the American youth and the growing cultural population of the United States. The mission is to connect diverse youth through sports competition, bridging together health and wellness with body, mind & spirit.

After years of successful management of this event’s 48 year history, the Los Angeles Jr. Chamber of Commerce turned to Don Janklow to re-imagine the Games and take the event to the next level. Janklow has created successful marketing programs for events such as the Los Angeles and New York City Marathons, and The Indy 500. Janklow partnered with veteran television executive and creative director Billy Frank who has worked on many events and syndicated shows, with networks, studios, and Fortune 500 companies, and traveled the world for international campaigns for the Olympic Games. Billy is a multiple award-winning Executive Producer and CEO of the successful production firm, Make It Happen Productions.

Over the Summer Games rich history, which will now continue as the USA City Games™, more than 300,000 students have participated.

The USA City Games will take place at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, Recreation and Parks, and at University of Southern California beginning Spring, 2017

Up to 15,000 male and female sports team participants (aged 12-18) from Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Middle and High Schools, Los Angeles Recreation & Parks, and surrounding communities will compete in this team and individual sport invitational in Basketball, Softball, Football, Soccer, Lacrosse, Girls Volleyball, Track & Field, and Youth Obstacle Racing. In total, 150,000+ families, visitors, and athletes will attend preliminary games, final events, and opening and closing ceremonies.
