The U.S. Army Rapid Equipping Force (REF) is a defense-focused organization within the Armed Forces that delivers urgent materiel solutions to U.S. Army units deployed globally, while also informing future materiel development for the force. Based in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, REF operates as a quick-reaction body tasked with providing required equipment to active duty, Reserve, and National Guard soldiers on or preparing for deployment, often delivering solutions within about 180 days. REF supports a broad range of warfighting functions and prioritizes equipping efforts for current challenges such as subterranean operations, electronic warfare, unmanned systems and counter-unmanned systems, robotics, and virtual training. The organization has a relatively small footprint and its work is integrated with ongoing Army modernization and readiness objectives, as reflected in its ongoing role since 2002 and its focus on rapid response to urgent needs for the U.S. Army.
