The Urban League of Rochester is a mid-sized nonprofit based in Rochester, New York, and is affiliated with the National Urban League. Its mission is to help African-Americans, Latinos, the poor and other disadvantaged groups pursue economic self-reliance, equality, and civil rights. The organization pursues this through a combined strategy that focuses on education for youth to prepare them for the modern economy, pathways for adults to achieve economic self-sufficiency through employment, homeownership, entrepreneurship and wealth-building, and removing barriers to full participation in society. Founded in 1965 in response to racial unrest, the league began by addressing housing, employment, education, health and parity, and today operates more than 30 programs across areas such as youth services, economic development, employment services, family and children services, education, homeownership and entrepreneurial assistance. Based in Rochester, New York, it has historically served thousands of individuals, including more than 4,000 in 2013, and a recent development noted is its attendance at the 44th Annual Black Scholars Ceremony in May 2023.
