The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis is a mid-sized organization based in St. Louis, Missouri, operating within the advertising services sector. It traces its origins to 1918 when it began as the Urban League of the St. Louis Provident Association in response to a race riot in East St. Louis, and since then has evolved to address advocacy, basic needs, employment and education for African Americans and others. In 2005 the organization undertook a structured review to identify upcoming challenges, client needs, trends, and available resources to guide its work. It aims to empower African Americans and others in the region to achieve economic self-sufficiency, social equality, and civil rights. It pursues five strategic priorities: boosting economic empowerment, improving educational quality and equality, addressing families’ basic needs, fostering civic engagement and social justice, and delivering durable, reliable services.
