The University of California Washington D.C. Center extends UC’s teaching, service, and research mission to the capital. It operates as a multi-campus residential, instructional, and research hub in Washington, offering UC students and faculty opportunities to study, research, work, and live in the city’s cultural, political, and international environment. Located in an 11-story building near the White House, the center can accommodate more than 270 residents and serves as a base for UC programs in the capital. Students from participating UC campuses spend a term in residence to undertake internships with Congress, the White House, cabinet agencies, advocacy groups, non-profits, scientific laboratories, or media, gaining firsthand exposure to the American political process and practical work experience. Courses at the center support the academic component of each campus program, and many students produce research papers drawing on their internship experiences. Participating campuses include UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, UC Merced, UC Riverside, the University of Michigan, the University of Notre Dame, the University of San Francisco, and Mt. Holyoke.
