UNITAR serves as the training and capacity-building arm of the United Nations, focusing on turning knowledge into practical capability for peace, sustainable development, multilateral cooperation, and effective governance. It closes gaps in knowledge and skills through a mix of training, research, and innovative learning approaches, leveraging partnerships, digital learning, and knowledge platforms to build capacity among individuals, institutions, and organizations worldwide, especially in developing countries and vulnerable contexts, to advance sustainable development and multilateral cooperation. Founded in 1965, UNITAR is headquartered in Geneva and maintains a representation office in New York and project offices in Hiroshima and Bonn, delivering programs through both in-person and online modalities and collaborating with governments, UN agencies, international and regional bodies, foundations, academia, civil society, and the private sector. Its operations sit within the international affairs space, offering training, knowledge exchange, advisory support, and research across five workstreams: learning and skills development; knowledge platforms and systems; collaborative knowledge exchanges; advisory and institutional support; and research, including geospatial solutions. Recent developments include regional expansion to Riyadh and the launch of a global cybersecurity office there, alongside collaborations with ACCA and Columbia Business School and the introduction of a Master’s degree in Strategic Leadership and Artificial Intelligence with Gulf College.
