Amherst is a local government entity serving about 12,000 residents across roughly 3,500 households in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. It is governed under the SB2 annual Town Meeting framework, with a five-member Board of Selectmen overseeing the Town Administrator and department heads, and a Town Moderator organizing and moderating town meetings. The town operates several departments—Public Works, the Amherst Police Department, Amherst Fire Rescue, Finance, the Town Clerk, Community Development, Tax and Assessing, Recreation, and the Town Library—along with appointed commissions, trustees, and various volunteer committees that participate in governance. Amherst schools are operated by an independent school district with separately elected boards and are outside the purview of town government. Recent developments include recognition as one of the state's early Climate Leader Communities in 2025 and the August 2025 launch of a Civic Academy Program aimed at expanding resident civic engagement.
