Theater for the New City, based in New York City, is a mid-sized nonprofit operating in the performing arts. It stages 30 to 40 premieres of new American plays each year, with at least ten by emerging and young playwrights, illustrating a focus on nurturing new voices. Through its Resident Theater Program, TNC has helped launch the careers of influential artists and has hosted a range of experimental and multi-ethnic theatre companies. Beyond presenting its own productions, the organization supports theater groups without permanent homes, helping to incubate a diverse and collaborative scene. It has earned major recognitions, including a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and more than 40 OBIE Awards, and plans to resume its Dream Up Festival in 2025 under Crystal Field.
