Established at Lehigh University in 1885, The Tau Beta Pi Association is a national honor society that recognizes engineering students and alumni for distinguished scholarship and exemplary character. It is the only honor society that represents the engineering profession as a whole and is one of the oldest in the United States. The organization operates across a broad network of chapters, including 257 U.S. collegiate chapters and 52 active alumni chapters, with more than 640,000 initiates in its history. Its mission centers on recognizing achievements in engineering, celebrating notable contributors to the field, and promoting engineering as a valued career. The association is based in Knoxville, Tennessee. In late 2023, Tau Beta Pi announced a Faculty of the Year award recognizing a faculty member for undergraduate education, reflecting ongoing engagement with educators in the engineering community.
