The Hastings Center for Bioethics is an independent, nonpartisan research institute founded in 1969 and based in Garrison, New York, housed at the Woodlawn estate on the Hudson River. It conducts original research and engages with the public on ethical issues in health, health care, life sciences research, and the environment, aiming to inform individuals, communities, and societies. The center publishes two journals, Hastings Center Report and Ethics & Human Research, maintains the Hastings Bioethics Forum blog, hosts a visiting scholar program, and offers public lectures and seminars.
Its scholarship centers on five program areas: Children and Families; Aging, Chronic Conditions, and End of Life; Health and Health Care; Science and the Self; Humans and Nature. Hastings Center uses a dialogue-focused research process that convenes diverse views to address important questions, with staff skilled at facilitating frank conversations and adapting the approach per project. A recent development includes the launch of a medical AI ethics tool and an accompanying interactive tool to help policymakers, patients, and providers understand how AI is used in medicine and navigate the ethical questions that arise.
