The General Theological Seminary, founded in 1817, is a religious institution located in New York City and is the first seminary established by The Episcopal Church. Its Chelsea Square campus sits in the Chelsea neighborhood on a site donated by Clement Clarke Moore, and since 1822 the seminary has graduated more than 7,000 students who serve in religious roles worldwide. The seminary trains individuals for ordained ministry within The Episcopal Church and also supports a growing number pursuing lay ministries in addition to ordination. The institution operates as a small to mid-sized organization with a focus on theological education and community leadership. A notable recent development includes a collaboration with the Episcopal Preaching Foundation to launch a hybrid Master of Divinity program.
