The Daily Star is a Beirut-based English-language newspaper founded in 1952 to serve expatriates drawn to the oil industry, with initial circulation in Lebanon and expansion across the Arab world. Under publisher Kamel Mrowa, the paper sought to relay regional news to expatriates and introduce the Arab region to non-Arabic readers, earning a prominent position among Middle East English-language titles in the 1960s. It operated as a mid-sized publication with a long-standing role in the region’s media landscape. Following a period of rebuilding, the paper recommenced publishing in 1996 and later pursued modernization to strengthen reporting and expand regional reach, including a robust online edition that provided breaking news and continuous coverage of Lebanese and regional affairs. The Daily Star ceased print publication in February 2020 and closed its online edition in October 2021; in 2019, SelectMedia International LTD announced a partnership with The Daily Star to collaborate with Britain’s largest newspaper, magazine and digital publisher.
