The Bar Council of England and Wales functions as the representative body and public voice for the barrister profession in England and Wales, based in London. As the General Council of the Bar and the formally approved regulator for practising barristers, it delegates regulatory duties to the Bar Standards Board in line with the Legal Services Act 2007, while offering members guidance, training and events to support career development and uphold ethical standards. Its membership comprises more than 18,000 barristers, including both self-employed and employed practitioners, and the council uses that expertise to influence policy and communicate the barristers' contributions to the public and policymakers. It focuses on expanding career and business opportunities for barristers domestically and overseas and collaborates with national and international bar associations to develop legal links. A notable recent development is the December 2025 appointment of Jim Morris as Chief Executive.
