The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards is an independent, not-for-profit accreditation organization that collaborates across the health sector in Australia and internationally. Based in Sydney, New South Wales, it has operated for five decades developing performance standards for healthcare accreditation and related quality improvement programs tailored for hospitals and a broad range of health care organisations. Its activities are aimed at consumers, health care professionals, industry bodies and the wider community. Since 1989 it has led internationally in clinical data collection through the Clinical Indicator Program, the only data collection of its kind in the world. In 2016 it established the ACHS Improvement Academy to provide education aligned with the evolving health care environment. A recent development illustrates its accrediting reach; in 2024 West Wimmera Health Service was awarded three years of accreditation by ACHS International, with no recommendations.
