The Tennessee Department of Education administers the state’s education system, providing governance and support to districts and schools with the aim of improving student achievement and advancing equity. It serves approximately 998,000 students across 146 districts that include both urban and rural communities, and its headquarters are in downtown Nashville. The department also oversees specialized schools and programs, including the West Tennessee School for the Deaf, the Tennessee School for the Deaf, the Tennessee School for the Blink, the Alvin C. York Institute, and the Achievement School District. 

Operating under the five-year Tennessee Succeeds strategic plan, the department pursues goals intended to raise national and state benchmarks for student outcomes. Among the targets are ranking in the top half of states on the National Assessment of Educational Progress by 2019, reaching an average ACT composite score of 21 by 2020, and ensuring that the majority of the Class of 2020 earns a postsecondary certificate, diploma, or degree. The organization maintains a statewide workforce and operates from its Nashville base to influence K-12 education across Tennessee.
