Symberix is a small biotechnology company based in Durham, North Carolina, formed as an early-stage spin-out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It aims to develop symbiotic drugs that modulate bacteria to influence the microbiome without killing them, with the goal of improving human health. The company is pursuing a first-in-class approach to treat serious lower gastrointestinal diseases and mitigate GI side effects associated with cancer therapies and other treatments, building on the demonstration that the mammalian microbiome can be therapeutically controlled with small-molecule agents. Its leadership and advisory group bring deep microbiome expertise and experience in drug discovery, clinical development, and commercial biopharma. Recent activity centers on developing bacterial β-glucuronidase inhibitors as adjunctive therapy to mitigate drug-induced toxicities and exploring their use as monotherapy for lower GI disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease.
