SWOG Cancer Research Network designs and runs publicly funded clinical trials focused on improving outcomes for people with cancer, operating within the National Cancer Institute’s National Clinical Trials Network and its National Oncology Community Research Program. It comprises a broad network of researchers and professionals—more than 20,000 members across 46 states and eight other countries—collaborating to advance cancer care. Founded by the National Cancer Institute in 1956, SWOG coordinates its operations from Portland, Oregon, and San Antonio, Texas, with statistics and data management centers in Seattle, Washington, and support from The Hope Foundation for Cancer Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The organization supports researchers and clinicians through protocol development, data management, statistics, quality assurance, budgeting and contracts, information technology, and related functions that sustain multicenter trials. As a cooperative, publicly funded research network within the NCI framework, SWOG participates in efforts to raise standards in cancer treatment. In May 2026, SWOG and ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group announced a collaboration to analyze paired original and recurrent tumor specimens from two breast cancer trials, reflecting ongoing cross-group research activity.
