Sutherland Institute is an independent research and educational institution in Salt Lake City, Utah, founded in 1995. As a think tank, it conducts policy analysis and public-education efforts aimed at advancing civility, sound ideas, and principled public policy that supports faith, family, and free enterprise. It operates as a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization under the 501(c)(3) framework and relies on contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations, rather than government funding. In its role as a policy resource, it provides research and educational programs intended to inform discussions and decision-making around public policy. With a small to mid-sized staff, the institute engages in activities that foster public policy dialogue and collaboration with academic partners, including sponsorship of forums with Johns Hopkins University's SNF Agora Institute and UVU's Gary R. Herbert Institute for Public Policy. A notable recent development is the April 2025 launch of the Partners in Learning Certificate project, which publicly recognizes Utah school districts for making curriculum information accessible to parents.
