Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) is a nonprofit consortium of research institutions established in 1980 to design, build, and operate what is now the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory. Its mission is to advance collaborative research and education and to strengthen the scientific capabilities of its members and the nation. SURA currently operates the Jefferson Lab through SURATech, a joint venture with Virginia Tech. In addition to laboratory operations, the organization facilitates collaboration among government agencies and researchers across space science and engineering, nuclear physics, and data science to pursue discoveries with societal benefits. The organization is based in Washington, District of Columbia. In May 2026, SURA announced a partnership with Virginia Tech to establish SURATech, a joint venture that expands its research collaboration and laboratory operations.
