Special Citizens Futures Unlimited is a Bronx-based nonprofit organization that provides a comprehensive set of services for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, with a focus on promoting independence, inclusion, individuality, and productivity. Its programs include residential options, day habilitation, community habilitation, supported employment, and pre-vocational support, serving clients in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Westchester County. The organization traces its origins to 1976, formed by parents of autistic adolescents seeking long-term housing and day programming as their children aged out of traditional special education services, and it opened its first group home in 1981 after receiving a grant from OMRDD. With a workforce that supports hundreds of individuals, Special Citizens Futures Unlimited aims to deliver an integrated system of services that addresses housing, day services, and employment opportunities for adults and children with autism. A notable recent development includes a partnership announced in 2017 to establish a crisis care system for people with disabilities in collaboration with the American Association of Suicidology and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
