The South Carolina Environmental Law Project (SCELP) is a nonprofit public-interest law organization focused on safeguarding South Carolina's land, water, and communities. It is the only public-interest environmental law group that concentrates exclusively on South Carolina. Based in Georgetown, South Carolina, SCELP pursues its mission through legal action and advocacy aimed at protecting natural resources and local communities. The organization serves residents and communities throughout South Carolina, addressing environmental concerns through litigation and advocacy. In May 2023, SCELP filed a preliminary injunction against the Department of Health and Environmental Control to pause developments involving septic tanks near coastal waterways. The group has extended its geographic reach within the state, with a Greenville-based staff attorney joining the team in 2021.
