ソーラーフロンティアは親会社である昭和シェル石油が100年以上にわたって蓄積したエネルギー産業に関する知見と、30年以上の太陽電池に関する研究開発の歴史を受け継いでいます。昭和シェル石油は、1970年代のオイルショックを機に、業界の先駆者と共同で太陽電池技術の開発を開始しました。その後、1993年にCIS技術の将来性の高さに着目し、CIS薄膜太陽電池の研究開発に特化、2005年に事業化を決定しました。2007年に宮崎第1工場、2009年に宮崎第2工場、2011年には世界最大規模となる国富工場の商業生産に成功し、事業化の決定からわずか6年でグローバルプレーヤーの地位を確立しました。また、2015年春には、宮城県で東北工場の稼働も予定しており、さらなるCIS薄膜太陽電池の生産の強化を進めます。
