The Society for Military History is a higher education–oriented scholarly organization based in Lexington, Virginia. It traces its origins to 1933, when it began as the American Military History Foundation, later renamed the American Military Institute in 1939, and adopted its current name in 1990. The organization seeks to promote research and scholarship in military history. Its membership exceeds 2,700 and includes many leading scholars, military personnel, and other individuals with an interest in military history. In March 2023, the society appointed Kyle Longley, a Chapman University professor who holds the Henry Salvatori Professorship of American Values and Traditions and directs the War, Diplomacy, and Society program, as executive director.
