Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing is a non-profit organization headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, at 550 West North Street, with between 1,001 and 5,000 employees. It was founded in 1922 by six nurses at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses (now the Indiana University School of Nursing) in Indianapolis, and the name derives from Greek words meaning love, courage, and honor. It incorporated in 1985 as Sigma Theta Tau International Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The organization has a stated mission to develop nurse leaders anywhere to improve healthcare everywhere and a vision of connected, empowered nurse leaders transforming global healthcare. It engages in educational collaborations and programs, including partnerships with Johnson & Johnson to advance disaster preparedness, the launch of free, accredited training, and hosting international conferences such as the International Nursing Research Congress and the Creating Healthy Work Environments conference.
