Schoharie Mohawk Initiative for Science and Technology (SMIST) champions STEAM opportunities by identifying, developing, delivering, supporting, and leading initiatives for the Schoharie and Mohawk communities. As community advocates, we are committed to fostering collaboration and breaking down boundaries between individuals and organizations to increase STEAM opportunities for children. STEAM is not about the technology or platform as those are always changing. SMIST encourages critical thinking, development of technical and soft skills, and building of self-confidence. Students must not be afraid to fail and should be allowed to learn from their mistakes. As professionals in various career fields including engineering, technology and education, we recognize the benefits of STEAM education. SMIST is constantly exploring new ways to enrich young minds and excite students about STEAM. With our many years of professional experience, SMIST can provide STEAM programs, educational resources and curriculum development. To date, over 450 students from the Capital Region have participated in one or more of our programs or activities. By participating, students are exposed to topics and principles related to robotics, computer science and engineering, as well as have the opportunity to work together in situations that mirror industry and real-life (i.e., teamwork, collaboration, presentation). Ultimately, we believe STEAM is FUN!
