Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission is a United States–based, state-designated entity and a participant in the U.S. EPA’s National Estuary Program. It functions as a federal–state–local partnership that stewards Santa Monica Bay through coordinated policy and restoration efforts. The organization works with partners such as The Bay Foundation and local authorities to advance water quality improvements and coastal habitat restoration around the bay. 

Recent developments include a 2025 collaboration with the University of California, Los Angeles, where UCLA Samueli builds on coastal flood research and works with The Bay Foundation to improve water quality and conserve Santa Monica Bay’s natural resources. In 2023, the City of Santa Monica partnered with SMBRC on the Santa Monica Beach Dune Restoration Pilot, transforming a three-acre area north of the Pier into native coastal habitat. SMBRC has also engaged with regional partners such as the San Francisco Estuary Partnership to support engineering analyses related to efforts to keep vessel sewage out of California waterways.
