Based in Backus, Minnesota, Rural Renewable Energy Alliance (RREAL) is a small nonprofit established by volunteers in 2000 to tackle energy poverty through renewable energy. Its Solar Assistance program offers free solar installations to households eligible for federal energy assistance, providing reliable, domestically produced power and reducing ongoing energy costs. RREAL also runs a Solar-Design Build service that designs and installs solar electric and solar thermal systems for residential and commercial clients, with the proceeds funding its charitable and educational work. The organization conducts Education and Outreach to offer hands-on solar learning for people of all ages and backgrounds, helping to make solar energy more accessible. Its work targets low-income families facing energy burdens and works in partnership with state agencies, housing and redevelopment authorities, Habitat for Humanity affiliates, and others to connect eligible households with solar solutions. A recent development includes a 2026 collaboration with Solar United Neighbors to advance a solar co-op initiative.
