Founded in 1966, the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) is a Mahwah, New Jersey-based organization that generates, analyzes, evaluates, and distributes data to provide a scientific basis for the safe use of fragrances. It has assembled what it describes as the most comprehensive worldwide source of toxicology data, literature, and general information on fragrance and flavor raw materials, anchored by a database of over 80,000 references and roughly 200,000 human health and environmental studies. The organization’s fragrance ingredient safety assessment program draws on this resource to support safety conclusions, and its peer-reviewed work is accessible through rifm.org and related platforms. RIFM operates in the research services sector and serves stakeholders in fragrance safety, regulatory science, and related disciplines by producing and curating safety data and assessments. The organization is a small-to-mid-sized entity based in Mahwah, New Jersey; in 2026 it marked its 60th anniversary with the introduction of Trainee Awards to be presented at the Society of Toxicology annual meeting.
