Founded in 1954 as the region’s first music organization, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County presents performances by world-class classical musicians on stages across Orange County. In addition to concerts, it runs education programs designed to cultivate an appreciation for music for people of all ages. Over its history it has hosted most of Gramophone’s top twenty-ranked orchestras and maintains a strong lineup of touring ensembles and artists on the West Coast, including Riccardo Muti with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic, Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Yo-Yo Ma, and Itzhak Perlman.

Based in Irvine, California, the society’s Youth Music Education Programs reach more than 100,000 elementary through high school students each year, and are offered free of charge to schools, students, and parents. The Orange County Youth Symphony, founded in 1970 as the area’s first honors youth orchestra, is led by conductor Johannes Müller Stosch and is recognized as a leading youth orchestral program in Southern California. The Committees of the Philharmonic Society provide more than 90,000 hours of volunteer service annually to support these initiatives. In 2024, leadership changes occurred with the departure of the president and artistic director.
