Established in 2002, the Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute (PHLBI) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, freestanding research institution that is committed to advancing medical research that may lead to new treatments, early detection and prevention programs for rare cancers— including cancers of the heart, lung and blood.  PHLBI’s mission is to improve cancer patient’s health and quality of life by funding innovative lab research focused on developing next-generation cellular immunotherapies for cancer.  The prototype immunotherapies being developed at PHLBI’s research lab could form the basis of future treatments for many malignancies including mesothelioma, lung, brain, prostate, breast, and skin cancers.

The Pacific Mesothelioma Center (PMC) , a division of The Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute, was established in 2012 with the goal of becoming the most innovative research and treatment organization in the world for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM).  PMC is known internationally for its research and clinical guidelines promoting lung-sparing therapies for malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM).   PMC’s mission is to better serve a growing number of mesothelioma victims by supporting the first-of-its-kind and only in-house lab, in the nation.

One of the ways MC raises mesothelioma awareness and funds for research is by hosting two annual events.  PMC's International Symposium on Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma, jointly hosted by UCLA,  brings mesothelioma experts including thoracic surgeons, researchers, and nurses together to discuss the latest treatment options for mesothelioma.  In addition, PMC hosts its annual "5K Walk for Mesothelioma" each year at The Paramount Ranch to raise awareness and funds for mesothelioma research.
