Operation Understanding DC is a small nonprofit based in Washington, DC, serving youth across the DMV region. Founded in 1993, it aims to empower a generation of social justice leaders who advocate for respect, understanding, and cooperation while working to eradicate racism, anti-Semitism, and all forms of discrimination. The organization operates within the civic and social sector, engaging young people in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Its primary program is the Social Justice Fellowship, a year-long experience for high school juniors. Fellows are taught to recognize, confront, and challenge racism, anti-Semitism, and discrimination and to educate their communities on these issues. Through the fellowship, participants work to build bridges among people of diverse races, ethnicities, religions, socioeconomic backgrounds, and gender identities.
