NUMMI, originally established as New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc., was a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota that operated in Fremont, California from 1984 until it ceased production in 2010. Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, the plant introduced the Toyota Production System to the United States and fostered a collaborative factory culture that blended values from both partners with the local Silicon Valley context. During its operation, NUMMI produced several award-winning vehicles and employed a large workforce, illustrating a hybrid approach to motor vehicle manufacturing that emphasized teamwork, equity, involvement, mutual trust and safety. After the venture ended, the factory and property were acquired by Tesla in 2010, which continued vehicle production on the site. The company historically served the automotive market by delivering high-quality vehicles at lower costs through its production approach and joint labor relations strategy. }
